Description
Charles-Théodore FRÈRE (Paris 1814 – Paris 1888) Market scene in Cairo. Original oil on canvas 24.5 × 19 cm Signed and dated ‘Th. Frère in Cairo’ on the subject on the left. *** Oil on canvas, signed lower left (9⅝ × 7½ in.) An iconic figure of French Orientalism, Charles-Théodore Frère made several visits to Egypt from the 1850s onwards, where he painted numerous urban and everyday scenes. In this small-format composition, he captures the bustle of a Cairo market, rendered with the delicate brushwork and warm light characteristic of his works painted on location.
