An Orientalist painter trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Cabanel, Maurice Bompard is renowned for his luminous scenes of the Maghreb and the Near East. A tireless traveller, he spent time in Algeria, Tunisia and Venice, returning from his travels with numerous paintings that combine a keen eye for ethnographic detail with pictorial refinement. His work is characterised by a warm colour palette and meticulous composition, serving a vision of the Orient that is both realistic and poetic. Represented in several public collections, Bompard belongs to the great French Orientalist tradition of the turn of the 20th century.
