Provenance Private collection A pupil of Gustave Boulanger and Jean-Léon Gérôme at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Théophile François Henri Poilpot (1848–1915) made his debut at the Salon in 1874. As early as 1875, he exhibited *Le Tarabouk, souvenir d’Alger* there, a work that cemented his interest in Orientalist themes, inspired by Gérôme’s teachings. A renowned painter of military panoramas, he also produced, in 1900, a vast Orientalist panorama, *Algeria and Tunisia*, for the World’s Fair. He was made a Commander of the Legion of Honour in 1913. This oil painting, dated 1873, predates his official debut at the Salon and bears witness to his Orientalist practice during his formative years.
