Description
Jean Léon GÉRÔME (Vésoul, 1824 – Paris, 1904) Bacchante with a bunch of grapes (Bacchante and Cupid) Gilt bronze cast Signed J. L. GEROME on the pedestal Foundry mark SIOT-PARIS (Siot-Decauville) France, c. 1892 H.: 35 cm *** Gilt bronze, signed on the base, foundry stamp Siot-Decauville, France, circa 1892 (height 13¾ in.) A Bacchante leaning on a thyrsus, whilst a winged child climbs up the staff to grasp a bunch of grapes, illustrates the sculptural work of Jean-Léon Gérôme, a leading figure of French Academicism and Orientalism. Inspired by Dionysian themes, *The Bacchante with a Bunch of Grapes* forms part of his body of Neo-Greek bronzes, which he produced late in his career. Produced by Siot-Decauville in the 1890s, these works enjoyed considerable success owing to the quality of their modelling and the balance between naturalism and classical idealisation. The model is listed in the catalogue raisonné of Gérôme by Ackerman & Manuel under number S.26, under the titles *Bacchante and Infant (Wood Nymph)*, *Bacchante with a Bunch of Grapes* or *Bacchante and Cupid*. Siot-Decauville produced this model in several sizes; two sizes are documented (97 cm and 58 cm), and smaller versions, such as this one, were also marketed. Reference: Gérald M. Ackerman & Ulrich Manuel, *The Life and Work of Jean-Léon Gérôme*, 1986, p. 318, no. S.26; illustration p. S.25, B2.
