This model belongs to the sculptor’s late creative period. Presented in wax at the 1878 Salon, then in bronze in 1879, it forms part of the series of Orientalist and hunting figures that Mêne developed towards the end of his career. A major 19th-century sculptor, Pierre-Jules Mêne is regarded as one of the pioneers of the ‘French animal school’, alongside Antoine-Louis Barye, Auguste Cain and François Pompon. He specialised in small and medium-sized bronze works, produced exclusively by his own studio, the quality of whose chiselling and the consistency of whose castings are universally recognised. His work enjoyed widespread success, leading to numerous editions during the second half of the 19th century.
