Description
Dario MECATTI (Florence 1909 – Rio de Janeiro 1976) Pilgrims on their way to Mecca Oil on panel 53 x 160 cm Signed lower right: D. Mecatti *** Oil on panel, signed lower right (20⅞ × 63 in.) Trained in Florence without having followed an academic course, Dario Mecatti (Florence, 1909 – Rio de Janeiro, 1976) made his first trip to North Africa in 1933 — Libya, Tunisia and Algeria — where he exhibited his work, before spending time in Morocco between 1936 and 1939, producing numerous works depicting local scenes and customs. This expansive composition, depicting a crowd in white garments converging across a desert and mountainous landscape, evokes pilgrimages, the holiest of which is that to Mecca. Given the painter’s travels in North Africa, it could depict a moussem — a regional pilgrimage to the tomb of a local saint, a widespread practice in the Maghreb — or a communal gathering linked to a religious festival such as Eid al-Adha. Provenance: Formerly in a private collection. Acquired through a private sale.
