A French Orientalist painter, Eugène Deshayes distinguished himself through his luminous and sensitive work, influenced by his travels around the Mediterranean basin. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Angers, he developed a Post-Impressionist style combining rigorous draughtsmanship with sensual use of colour. In his landscapes of Algeria, Kabylie and the Mediterranean coast, he captured the play of light and the power of the elements. His work is characterised by a vivid and colourful touch, attentive to scenes of everyday life as well as to ancient ruins bathed in sunlight. A painter of the wind, stones and faces, Deshayes ranks among those artists who have successfully combined an ethnographic perspective with pictorial poetry.
