Purchased from Bridgman in Lyons-la-Forêt in 1925 *** Oil on panel, signed lower right (9½ × 7½ in.) Bibliography G. M. Ackerman, Les Orientalistes de l’École américaine, Paris, 1994, pp. 20–49. The mausoleum of Sidi Abderrahmane — patron saint of Algiers and Sufi theologian (1384–1479) — is one of the major spiritual sites in the Casbah; Bridgman depicted the subject in several formats, with a larger version (81 × 60 cm) having been sold at Millon, Paris, on 19 May 2014 (lot 214). Born in Alabama, Frederick Arthur Bridgman (1847–1928) moved to Paris in 1866, where he studied under Gérôme for four years; discovered Algeria in 1870 and then Egypt in 1873, and established himself as the leading exponent of American Orientalism, exhibiting in New York and Chicago from 1890 onwards.
