An Australian painter trained in Paris, Mary Cockburn Mercer frequented the Montparnasse bohemian scene — Picasso, Chagall, Pascin, Van Dongen — before joining André Lhôte’s Academy in 1922, where she absorbed the principles of Synthetic Cubism. Based in Cassis, she developed a style structured by Lhôte’s geometry, tempered by a Mediterranean colour palette. Her works on Moroccan themes and her nudes reveal a marked interest in the female figure. Her work is held at the National Gallery of Victoria (Melbourne) and the S.H. Ervin Gallery (Sydney).
