Description
Mary COCKBURN MERCER (Australia 1882–1963) Blind Beggar Original oil on canvas 73 x 60 cm Signed lower right and dated ‘M Cockburn Paris 1914’ Bears a handwritten note on the stretcher: ‘M.C. Mercer Honore Paris’, and an old, partially legible handwritten label: ‘Marseille Mercer Cockburn’ Bears on the crossbar of the stretcher a former handwritten label reading ‘Head of Blind Beggar Mary Cockburn-Mercer’ and the handwritten inscription ‘Blind Beggar’. *** Oil on canvas, signed lower right and dated (28¾ × 23⅝ in.) An Australian painter trained in Paris, Mary Cockburn Mercer frequented the Montparnasse bohemian scene — Picasso, Chagall, Pascin, Van Dongen — before joining André Lhôte’s Academy in 1922, where she absorbed the principles of Synthetic Cubism. Based in Cassis, she developed a style structured by Lhôte’s geometry, tempered by a Mediterranean colour palette. Her works on Moroccan themes and her nudes reveal a marked interest in the female figure. Her work is held at the National Gallery of Victoria (Melbourne) and the S.H. Ervin Gallery (Sydney).
