A virtuoso watercolourist, Alexander Charles Robinson (1867–1952) was a member of the New York Water Colour Club, the American Water Colour Society and the Société Nationale des Aquarellistes in Paris. His African market scenes, portraits in traditional dress and bazaar scenes reveal a vibrant palette and a remarkable mastery of light. Having settled in Cassis in the 1920s, he became a permanent fixture in the Mediterranean art scene of the interwar period. In 1911, the Detroit Museum of Art dedicated an exhibition of over fifty of his works to him; his works were also exhibited at the Boston Art Club, the Pennsylvania Academy and the Art Institute of Chicago.
