Fernand Lantoine, a French painter and draughtsman trained in Brussels and a friend of Paul Signac, evolved from Neo-Impressionism towards a pared-back style in which line takes precedence over colour. A marine painter from 1922 onwards, he travelled to Africa, the Belgian Congo, Madagascar and the Arctic, becoming one of the leading figures in Africanist painting.
