Fernand LANTOINE (Maretz 1876 – Maretz 1955) View of Algiers Original oil on canvas 46 x 61 cm Signed and dated lower left: Lantoine 1941 (Damage and loss) *** Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left (18⅛ × 24 in.) Fernand Lantoine, a French painter and draughtsman trained in Brussels and a friend of Paul Signac, evolved from Neo-Impressionism towards a pared-back style in which line takes precedence over colour. A marine painter from 1922 onwards, he travelled to Africa, the Belgian Congo, Madagascar and the Arctic, becoming one of the leading figures in Africanist painting.
