The son of the famous Art Nouveau cabinetmaker Louis Majorelle, Jacques Majorelle (Nancy, 1886 – Paris, 1962) trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Nancy and then at the Académie Julian in Paris, before discovering Morocco in 1917 and settling permanently in Marrakesh in 1919. From 1923 onwards, he created the garden that bears his name, which became famous for the intense ultramarine blue he used there. From the 1930s onwards, he developed a distinctive technique using tempera and gouache on black paper, which enabled him to bring light out of the darkness — a technique particularly suited to the shaded scenes of souks and medinas, as seen in this 1955 work, one of the final major phases of his Moroccan oeuvre.
