Having settled in Morocco in 1922, Jules Henri Derche established himself as a leading figure in the French art scene in Morocco, close to Jacques Majorelle, for whom he acted as gallery owner in Casablanca from 1939 onwards. In 1929, he created the poster *L’Hiver, le Printemps au Maroc* for the P.L.M., here adapted for the Compagnie Générale Aéropostale. In an Art Deco style featuring flat areas of golden ochre, powdery pinks and brilliant whites, he depicts a caravan heading for Marrakesh, with the Bab Doukkala gate silhouetted against the snow-capped Atlas Mountains — a synthetic composition typical of the great travel posters of the interwar period, blending Orientalism with graphic modernity.
