Alexandre Roubtzoff (Saint Petersburg, 1884 – Tunis, 1949), trained at the Saint Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts under Ziongliński and Kardovski, where he won six grand prizes, arrived in Tunis on 1 April 1914 and settled there permanently, obtaining French nationality in 1924. Breaking away from the romanticised vision of 19th-century Orientalism, he developed a realistic and documentary approach to Tunisia, painting its landscapes, scenes of daily life and traditional costumes in close collaboration with the local population. He exhibited in Tunis, London (Goupil Gallery) and Paris (Manuel Gallery, the 1930 Salon des Indépendants), and died in Tunis, where he is buried in Borgel Cemetery.
