We would like to thank Mr François Boule, who has kindly confirmed the authenticity of this work.
A French Post-Impressionist painter trained in Paris, Fernand Maillaud is distinguished by his luminous compositions, his solid construction of forms and his warm colour palette, initially devoted to landscapes of the Berry region, female figures and portraits tinged with symbolism. His signature in capital letters dates his works to before 1900 — that is to say, prior to his actual travels to the Maghreb, which he undertook after the First World War and which intensified in the 1930s. The ‘Orientalist’ works from this early period should therefore be interpreted with caution: they are most often studio compositions or costumed portraits, drawing on the exotic imagery in vogue at the time and the artist’s penchant for staging scenes, rather than direct accounts of his travels.
