Winner of the Abd-el-Tif Prize in 1920, he spent two years in Algiers, where he met Étienne Dinet, then Albert Marquet — a decisive encounter that steered his work towards greater freedom. Trained in pastel and charcoal, he led a bohemian life in Montparnasse (Carco, Asselin, Dorgelès) before winning the Prix de l’Indochine in 1923 and travelling throughout Asia. It was, however, Algiers that brought him to prominence: there he painted tirelessly the Casbah, the women and the common people, in a style of expressive candour hailed by the critics, which was crowned in 1931 with the Cottet Prize from the Society of Orientalist Painters.
