Bachir Chaouch YELLES (Tlemcen 1921 – Algiers 2022) The Odalisque, 1956 Gouache on paper 24 x 29 cm (image size) Signed and dated lower right: Bachir Yelles 56 *** Gouache on paper, signed and dated lower right (9½ × 11⅜ in.) Bachir Yellès trained from 1943 to 1947 at the École des Beaux-Arts in Algiers, in the studios of Andrée Du Pac and Louis Fernez. In 1944, he took part in the first exhibition of Muslim painters and miniaturists from Algeria, alongside Ali-Khodja, Hemche and Temmam. From 1947 to 1950, he continued his training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Eugène Narbonne and Nicolas Untersteller, and in 1950, together with Baya and Orlando Pelayo, contributed to the illustrations for Jean Sénac’s magazine *Soleil*. Having graduated with honours from the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1958, in 1962 he became the first director of the National School of Architecture and Fine Arts in Algiers, a post he held until 1982, and in 1975 he served as acting curator of the National Museum of Fine Arts in Algiers. His works are held in the collections of the National Museum of Fine Arts in Algiers, as well as in the Algerian embassies in Paris, Washington, New York and London.
