Trained at the Beaux-Arts in Oran, Abdelkader Guermaz began his career in the figurative style before turning to abstraction in 1955, following his exposure to the Parisian avant-garde. Having attracted attention early on (Menton Biennale, 1951; exhibitions alongside Picasso and Buffet), he moved to Paris in 1961 and joined the Nouvelle École de Paris, whilst continuing to maintain a presence in Algeria. Supported by the Entremonde Gallery until 1981, he exhibited internationally; his work is now held at the Centre Pompidou, the National Gallery in Algiers and the Arab World Institute. An independent and discreet artist, he developed a meditative style of abstraction centred on light and inner life, and died in Paris in 1996. His work has since been rediscovered, notably during the exhibition *Modernités plurielles* at the Centre Pompidou (2014).
