A Tunisian painter trained in Tunis under Ridha Bettaieb and later at the Grande Chaumière in Paris, Schems-Eddine Sahraoui, known as Schems, has established himself as a leading figure of North African modernism, exhibiting notably with the Arab League in Paris (1995) and in Carthage (1996). In this view of the surroundings of a mosque on Place du Gouvernement in Algiers, his rich and incisive expressionist brushwork, and his palette of ochres and earth tones warmed by mauves and whites, convey the freedom characteristic of his urban scenes — a testament to his roots in both Tunis and Algiers and his preference for the city as his favoured subject.
