Description
Henri PONTOY (Reims 1888 – Six-Fours-les-Plages 1968) Cameroonian sorcerer Oil on canvas 81 x 65 cm Signed lower right *** Oil on canvas, signed lower right (31⅞ × 25⅝ in.) Henri Jean Pontoy (1888–1968), trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and initially associated with the Maghreb, expanded his practice after the war to sub-Saharan Africa — Guinea, Ivory Coast and Cameroon, where he received an award in 1951. This oil painting depicting a Cameroonian sorcerer belongs to this rarer body of work, reflecting his interest in the cultures and rituals of Black Africa, beyond his usual Orientalist style.
