Lucien MARTIAL (Paris 1892 – Paris 1987) The Ramparts of Fez Oil on hardboard 60 x 73 cm Signed lower right: Lucien Martial Bears the handwritten inscriptions on the reverse: ‘Remparts Fez Luicen Martial 7 rue Alfred Stevens Paris IX’ *** Oil on hardboard, signed lower right (23⅝ × 28¾ in.) A pupil of Fernand Cormon at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Lucien Martial (1892–1987) exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1921 onwards. A prolific and award-winning painter — winner of the 2nd Prix de Rome in 1923 and the Grand Prix at the Paris International Exhibition in 1937 — he also taught at the École des Beaux-Arts de Québec from 1925 to 1936. The art historian Gérard Morisset placed him in the tradition of Chassériau, Puvis de Chavannes and Maurice Denis.
