Trained at the École Estienne, Jean-François Arrigoni-Neri discovered the Maghreb in Algeria at the age of twenty — a defining encounter with its landscapes, its people and their ways of life. This experience has had a lasting influence on his work: markets, traditional festivals and scenes from everyday life in Morocco and the Maghreb, rendered with tenderness and a keen sense of contrasting atmospheres. From the mid-1980s onwards, he abandoned illustration to devote himself fully to Orientalist painting, which established him as one of the leading French painters of this movement.
