Description
Jean-François ARRIGONI-NERI (Paris 1937 – Créteil 2014) Moroccan souk in Rissani Oil on canvas 130 x 162 cm Signed lower right, countersigned and titled on the reverse *** Oil on canvas, signed lower right, countersigned and titled on the reverse (51⅛ × 63¾ in.) Trained at the École Estienne, Jean-François Arrigoni-Neri discovered the Maghreb in Algeria at the age of twenty — a defining encounter with its landscapes, its people and their ways of life. This experience has had a lasting influence on his work: markets, traditional festivals and scenes from everyday life in Morocco and the Maghreb, rendered with tenderness and a keen sense of contrasting atmospheres. From the mid-1980s onwards, he abandoned illustration to devote himself fully to Orientalist painting, which established him as one of the leading French painters of this movement.
