Description
Edy LEGRAND (Bordeaux 1892 – Bonnieux 1970) Composition Original oil on canvas 129.05 × 194 cm Signed lower right: Edy Legrand Bears the handwritten inscription ‘Edy Legrand’ on the back of the stretcher *** Oil on canvas, signed lower right (50¾ × 76⅜ in.) Born to a French mother and a Russian Jewish father, Édouard Warschawsky, known as Edy Legrand, initially pursued a career as a graphic designer and illustrator — the album *Macao et Cosmage* in 1919, followed by the Chicago World’s Fair in 1932 alongside Picasso, Matisse and Derain. His encounter with Morocco in 1933, whilst staying with Jacques Majorelle, transformed his painting: the North African light steered him away from Orientalist meticulousness towards a thicker brushstroke, where colour took precedence over outline. Having settled in the 1960s in a former quarry in the Luberon, in Bonnieux, in search of light reminiscent of the Maghreb, he took this evolution further, towards a lyrical abstraction, a sensory memory of the landscapes he had travelled through.
