Description
* Gora MBENGUE (Senegal 1931–1988) Untitled (Seated Figure), 1975 Acrylic on jute canvas 61 × 57 cm Signed and dated lower right *** Acrylic on jute canvas, signed and dated lower right (24 × 22½ in.) Provenance: Private collection, Senegal This lot is on temporary import and will be sold subject to standard VAT (at a rate of 5.5% of the total price). This work occupies a unique place in Gora M’Bengue’s career: unlike the works mounted under glass (souwer) that made him famous, this is a painting on jute canvas, an extremely rare medium for him, revealing a more immediate brushstroke and a freer composition, demonstrating his ability to transpose the language of souwer onto a different medium without losing its power. Born in Dakar in 1931, and self-taught, Gora M’Bengue is one of the major pioneers of the revival of Senegalese souwer, which he transformed in the 1960s from a form of popular decorative art into a genuine artistic language, rooted in the urban culture of Dakar.
