This work occupies a unique place in Gora M’Bengue’s career: unlike the works mounted under glass (souwer) that made him famous, this is a painting on jute canvas, an extremely rare medium for him, revealing a more immediate brushstroke and a freer composition, demonstrating his ability to transpose the language of souwer onto a different medium without losing its power.
Born in Dakar in 1931, and self-taught, Gora M’Bengue is one of the major pioneers of the revival of Senegalese souwer, which he transformed in the 1960s from a form of popular decorative art into a genuine artistic language, rooted in the urban culture of Dakar.
