Description
Clément SERNEELS (Etterbeek 1912 – Ixelles 1991) African Village, 1941 Oil on panel 25 x 33 cm Signed and dated lower left: C Serneels 1941 *** Oil on panel, signed and dated lower left (9⅞ × 13 in.) Clément Serneels, born to a Spanish mother and a Flemish father, studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. In 1936, he was awarded a travel grant by the Ministry of the Colonies to visit the Belgian Congo, where he painted en plein air from Matadi to Élisabethville; the exhibition of these paintings upon his return to Brussels, which sold out entirely, marked the beginning of his fame. Having settled in the Congo in 1939, he subsequently lived on the shores of Lake Kivu from 1951 to 1960, whilst holding numerous exhibitions in Brussels and Lisbon. He also spent time in South Africa from 1945 onwards, where his exhibitions in Cape Town and Johannesburg enjoyed similar success. Forced to leave the Congo in 1960 due to political unrest, he settled in Brussels, where he died in 1991. His work has also been exhibited in Mexico City, New York, Houston and Lisbon.
