André Mahieu, a Belgian painter and architect, trained under the Impressionist portraitist Fernand Toussaint before studying architecture at the Institut Saint-Luc in Ghent. From 1927 onwards, he travelled to the Belgian Congo to paint — landscapes, scenes of everyday life and portraits of tribal chiefs — before travelling in 1936 to Jerusalem, Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco, and then returning to the Congo. Awarded a scholarship by the Ministry of the Colonies in 1938, he exhibited that same year at the Exhibition of European Orientalists in Paris; he is regarded as one of the most representative Belgian colonial artists of his generation.
