Guilherme d’Oliveira Marques, a Portuguese painter and sculptor born in Brazil, settled in the Belgian Congo around 1929–1930, by which time he was already an established painter. Fascinated by Congolese landscapes and life, he painted rural scenes, bustling markets and portraits — notably of dignitaries, missionaries and artists such as Allard l’Olivier — whilst also illustrating books and newspapers, including *Cosmo-Kin* in the 1930s. Regarded as one of the pioneers of 20th-century Africanist painting, he died in Kinshasa in 1960.
