An Africanist and Orientalist painter listed by Lynne Thornton in *Les Peintres africanistes*, Gaston Fontaine undertook three trips to Africa — to Senegal and Guinea — in 1937, 1938 and 1948. He exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in 1931 and 1932, and then at the Grand Palais in Paris in 1940, in the fine arts section of the Salon de la France d’outre-mer.
