Dom depicts traditional Congolese culture in everyday life: his works convey the quiet dignity of vulnerable communities living off the fruits of their labour. Like many painters from the Belgian Congo who were called upon to unleash a creative energy untouched by external influences, he uses a palette knife to capture the light through the texture of the paint. This technique, which is both gestural and textured, enables him to develop a personal and powerful style, in which the subject, merely suggested, remains figurative whilst verging on a form of abstraction.
