A Belgian Post-Impressionist painter trained under R. Heintz at the Liège Academy, André Hallet was sent to the Belgian Congo by the government in 1934. There he formed a relationship with the Tutsi king Mwami Mutara III of Rwanda-Burundi, for whom he painted a series of detailed portraits of the royal family and the court. Having settled in Kisenyi, on the shores of Lake Kivu, in 1947—where he remained until his death—he is best known for his landscapes and scenes of the Congo and Kivu, exhibited in over sixty museums worldwide, including the Louvre.
