Marie-Louise Verwée, who came from a distinguished family of Belgian painters (her grandfather Alfred and her great-grandfather Louis Verwée), trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts under Constant Montald. Admired by James Ensor in the late 1930s, she painted realistic portraits of miners from the North, exhibited in Douai, Lille and Béthune, as well as landscapes and scenes gathered from around the world — Scandinavia, Spain, Hungary — and in Africa, in Guinea and Senegal, where she met Léopold Sédar Senghor.
