Description
Louis KOYONGONDA (Congo, 1918–?) Portrait, circa 1950–1960 Oil on panel 36.5 × 26 cm Signed ‘L. Koyongonda’ lower right *** Oil on panel, signed lower right (14⅜ × 10¼ in.) A pupil at the Stanley Pool School in Léopoldville from 1948, Koyongonda trained under Laurent Moonens alongside Mongita and Kiabelua. Characterised by the use of pure, vivid colours inherited from Moonens’ Fauvist influence, this school was one of the earliest centres of modern Congolese painting. There, Koyongonda developed a free, realistic style, which he applied to landscapes and market scenes as well as portraits, of which this panel offers a particularly striking example.
