Charles Ernest Smets, a Belgian painter, draughtsman and engraver trained in the academic tradition, turned his attention to landscape and genre scenes. His travels in North Africa, particularly in Morocco, but also in sub-Saharan Africa, had a lasting influence on his work: following in the footsteps of the Belgian Orientalists, but with a freer, more Impressionist approach, he focused on the light, colour and spontaneity of markets, alleyways, oases and local ceremonies.
