Pierre de Vaucleroy, a Belgian painter, watercolourist, draughtsman and engraver, trained under Constant Montald at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, where he himself taught from 1925 to 1957. He distinguished himself as a painter of figures, nudes and landscapes, on the fringes of naïve art. His stay in the Belgian Congo in 1926–1927 left a deep impression on him: he brought back his impressions, which he published in 1934 in *Noirs et Blanc*, a collection of letters addressed to his wife.
