Description
Joseph AMEDOKPO (Togo, born 1946) Ibibio Masquerade Heads, 2017 Oil on canvas 40 x 31 cm Signed lower right: Joseph Amedokpo Titled, located and dated on the reverse: Ibibio Masquerade heads. Togo, 2017. *** Oil on canvas, signed lower right, titled, located and dated on the reverse (15¾ × 12¼ in.) Born in Vogan, Togo, in 1946, Joseph Amedokpo moved to Lagos, Nigeria, at the age of eight, where he studied fine art at the Yaba Trade Centre from 1966 to 1968. His style blends abstract personification, magical realism and contemporary African art. He paints in oils on recycled flour sacks, which are washed and stretched onto frames. Drawing on the Ibibio mask-making traditions of southern Nigeria – a people with whom he had direct contact during his long stay in Lagos – the artist conveys, through a vivid colour palette and a rhythmic frontal composition, the formal power of these ceremonial faces in his work.
