Description
Domolo stick with openwork zigzag decoration ending in a stylised horse's head, mouth open and ears erect. Wood, honey and brown patina, small erosions from time on the lower part, beautiful and very old localised marks of use. Dogon, Mali. 67.5 × 27 cm Used by members of the Yona society at funerals, domolo sticks symbolised the link between the world of the living and that of the spirits. The zigzag pattern evokes rain and the cult of Lebe, the god of renewal, while the horse's head refers to Nommo and the celestial ark in Dogon myths. With its slender form and subtle balance between geometric shapes and rounded volumes, this work illustrates the ability of Dogon sculptors to combine abstraction and figuration in a highly modern spiritual expression.
