Description
Statuette
Depicting a standing figure on massive, slightly bent legs with marked joints. The long arms, detached from the body, end in hands placed at right angles to the lower abdomen in a taboo gesture. The chest is swollen, the strong neck surmounted by a head with a haughty expression, accentuated by a small mouth set in a diamond-shaped space sculpted in relief. The arrowhead nose rises from the top of the forehead, while the head ends in a conical plateau.
Hardwood, old brown patina, traces of white pigment.
Dogon, Mali.
33 × 6 cm
This statuette is part of the Dogon tradition of initiatory representations in which gestures take on a sacred meaning. The hands placed at right angles to the lower abdomen evoke a gesture of restraint, linked to the control of vital forces and the mastery of the fertilising principle. This positioning, common in Dogon statuary, expresses the notion of taboo, modesty and contained power, underlining the spiritual dimension of the body as a receptacle for creative energy.
