Description
Gun staff in openwork bronze.
Bronze with green and bluish patina, old oxidation, marks of age.
Archaic China, Warring Kingdoms period, 5th-3rd century BC, southern region (Chu / Wu-Yue).
18 × 5.5 cm
During the Warring Kingdoms period, pole weapons such as halberds (ji) played a central role in military equipment. They were made up of several bronze components attached to a wooden handle, ensuring strength, balance and combat effectiveness.
The piece on display is a staff element, probably terminal or intermediate, whose openwork structure and lateral protrusions helped to secure and stabilise the whole. It illustrates the high technical level of the bronze workshops of southern China, where shapes became more complex and expressive, combining utilitarian function with a symbolic dimension linked to the status of the wearer.
