Katanga region, south-east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Small copper coins, among the earliest forms of this type of currency, which appeared as early as the 14th century in the Katanga region. Used for everyday trade and as dowries.

Provenance:
Collected in Katanga (Belgian Congo) between 1952 and 1970 by Charles Mahauden, a Belgian colonial administrator nicknamed Kisongokimo by the Grand Chief of the Baluba.
