A ritual altar resting on a base carved in the shape of a female rider skilfully mounted on the animal. Her youthful bosom is emphasised, whilst her raised arms support the seat. Her scarified face features large, wide-open, alert eyes and an angular mouth in a Cubist style. Wood, showing very old, localised weathering, traces of natural pigments and brown patina; the animal’s head is missing. Yoruba, Nigeria 77 × 32 cm — Male equestrian representations are well known in the Yoruba region, but female figures of this type remain extremely rare. This example may belong to the limited corpus of altars associated with female cults of authority or fertility.
