A very fine ceremonial spoon featuring stylised figures Wood, aged brown patina, multicoloured milking beads, signs of wear Dan, Republic of Côte d’Ivoire 39.9 × 10.3 cm Among the Dan people, certain carved spoons served as true emblems of honour, associated with women recognised for their hospitality, generosity and culinary skills. Presented during community ceremonies, they were used in particular during harvest festivals or ritual gatherings, where handfuls of rice might be thrown as a sign of blessing and abundance. These objects combined symbolic function, social prestige and an idealised representation of femininity. This spoon exemplifies a particularly accomplished design. The bowl naturally extends from the face in a stylisation reduced to the essentials, whilst the body rests on powerful legs with a supple and balanced form. The volumes of the thighs, knees and buttocks contribute to a composition of great sculptural coherence, almost architectural in nature.
