Description
Mask with hair marked by incisions Hardwood, original brown and honey-coloured patina, signs of wear Nepal unmounted 25 x 18 cm Masks from the mid-range hills of Nepal remain difficult to document with precision. Their use is generally associated with village traditions, whether ritual or theatrical, and is sometimes linked to the Tamang, Rai or Gurung peoples. The incised hair, the frontal orientation of the face and the intensity of the gaze lend this work an enigmatic presence, somewhere between a human figure, a protective spirit and a character from ritual theatre.
