Double-faced helmet mask. Woven basketwork, plant fibres, traces of natural pigments, signs of age. Middle Sepik (Kapriman region), Papua New Guinea. 103 x 54 cm This type of wickerwork mask is part of the traditions of the Middle Sepik, where helmet-shaped masks are used during initiation rituals and performances in ceremonial houses. Worn during initiation performances, it transforms the dancer into an ancestral entity. The dual representation reinforces the idea of presence and multiple perceptions, whilst the woven, covered and moulded structure demonstrates a craftsmanship specific to the Kapriman groups.
