Ritual horn of a Datu sorcerer featuring a crouching ancestral figure at the top. Horn, with an old brown patina and signs of wear, cotton thread. Toba Batak, Sumatra, Indonesia. 43 x 37 cm This horn forms part of the ritual practices of the Batak people, where it is used by the datu, a specialist in invisible forces. It contains magical substances known as pupuk, a mixture of organic and mineral elements imbued with power. The figure at the top reinforces the object’s protective function, playing a part in rites related to protection and healing. It thus serves as a vessel of power and a marker of its owner’s status.
