Description
Jug with a single handle featuring concentric decoration Polychrome terracotta. Repaired by gluing, with fillings not exceeding 10 per cent of the work’s total mass; some minor repainting. Cyprus, Dichrome style, 11th–7th century BC. 20 x 15 cm Provenance: former label from a gallery dating from the 1900s/1920s, Rue de la Paix, Paris. Inventory number partially legible. Cypriot Bichrome-style pottery, which developed from the 11th century BC onwards, draws on Mycenaean and Minoan traditions whilst incorporating Levantine influences. It is characterised by a painted decoration in brown-black and red on a beige-cream background, where the geometric motifs — concentric circles, medallions, radiating patterns — are arranged with great compositional rigour. The shape of this jar, with a flattened spherical body, a flared neck with painted rings and a ribbon-shaped handle, is characteristic of this island production. The central medallion, featuring a cross motif inscribed within concentric circles and surrounded by radiating patterns, bears witness to the decorative mastery of Cypriot potters of this period.
