The jumping hour complication, widely attributed to Austrian engineer Josef Pallweber in 1883, enjoyed particular popularity during the Art Deco period, when it was embraced by prestigious manufactures such as Breguet, Audemars Piguet and Vacheron Constantin. After falling out of fashion following the Great Depression and the Second World War, the complication saw a revival in the early 1990s.
Dating from circa 1992, the present Breguet reference 3420BA beautifully illustrates this renewed interest in alternative time displays. Its minimalist dial features a jumping hour aperture at 12 o'clock with red numerals, discreet dotted minute divisions, and classic Breguet numerals. Under certain lighting conditions, a hidden Breguet signature subtly appears beneath the 60-minute marker.
While understated in appearance, the watch retains the maison's signature design elements, including the blued steel Breguet hand, fluted caseband, sapphire-set crown, and elegant curved lugs, combining technical sophistication with timeless refinement.
