With the introduction of the Quantième Perpétuel Automatique in 1978, Audemars Piguet unveiled what was then the world's thinnest self-winding perpetual calendar movement. At a time when much of the watch industry was redirecting its efforts towards quartz technology during the height of the quartz crisis, the development of the ultra-thin calibre 2120/2800 stood as a remarkable technical and creative achievement.
Beyond its mechanical sophistication, the model also offered tremendous freedom in terms of design, materials, and execution. The manufacture in Le Brassus embraced this creative momentum wholeheartedly, producing a wide variety of configurations that reflected the bold and expressive aesthetic codes of the era.
Reference 25549, also known as 5549, remained in production from 1977 until 1991, with an average output of approximately twelve pieces per year. According to Audemars Piguet, around 156 examples in yellow gold and only 19 in white gold were produced during this period.
