From the late 19th century to the 1940s, a 34-kilometre-long, 250-metre-wide strip of land unsuitable for building, nicknamed ‘la Zone’, saw tens of thousands of workers—driven out of Paris by Baron Haussmann’s redevelopment projects—and peasants migrating to the capital crowd together there; they were given the nickname ‘zoniers’.
