Description
HANS STOLTENBERG-LERCHE (1867–1920) BAT VASE Gilded metal, ovoid in shape, decorated with bas-relief and high-relief depictions of bats flying over Paris, startled by the arrival of electricity. Signed, located and dated 1899. Height: 41.5 cm. Slight wear to the gilding. This rare example with a golden patina perfectly illustrates the Art Nouveau taste for this nocturnal animal and the still-recent arrival of the ‘Electricity Fairy’ in modern cities. The interest in bats is also reflected in the literature of the period, notably Robert de Montesquiou’s collection of poems published in 1892 and entitled ‘Les chauves-souris’.
