VICTOR BALTARD (1805–1874) MEDALLION ON THE PEDIMENT OF A MONUMENTAL GATE AT THE HALLES CENTRALES IN PARIS A large circular bas-relief bearing the coat of arms of the City of Paris, surrounded by oak leaves, surmounted by the motto ‘Fluctuat nec mergitur’. Iron and lead alloy. Marked by the foundry MIROY Frères. Circa 1854–1870. Diameter: 90 cm. PROVENANCE. A rare remnant from the demolition of the Paris Central Market in 1971–1973, this medallion was saved by Mr Pierre CRUCY, one of the demolition workers, who gave it to André and Yvette BONCOMPAIN, lovers of Paris and owners of the restaurant Le Grand Comptoir, founded at 4 Rue Pierre Lescot in the 1st arrondissement by Auguste BUISSON, the great-grandfather of the current owner. REFERENCE. Of the twelve that originally existed, only two other medallions similar to the coat of arms of Paris were saved from the demolition site: - One, from the collections of Roxane Debuisson, is held in the permanent collections of the Musée Carnavalet, Paris. It was exhibited as part of the exhibition ‘Victor Baltard: Iron and Brush’, 16 October 2012 – 13 January 2013, Musée d’Orsay, Paris. - Another was sold at auction by LUCIEN PARIS on 5 April 2022.
